ABSTRACTOCE-0623608A fundamental problem in physical oceanography and climate science concerns the mechanism, magnitude and stability of the meridional overturning circulation in the Atlantic Basin. One possibly critical factor is the remote influence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current which may shape the stratification in the Atlantic Ocean. In this study, the investigators from the University of Washington and the Naval Postgraduate School will use a combination of theoretical studies and numerical simulations to develop a conceptual understanding of how the Circumpolar Current is connected to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. This study will benefit society because it will improve the interpretation of the predictions of climate models. In addition, graduate students will be trained at the Naval Postgraduate School.
