Measurement of Muon Cooling with MICE

The University of California Riverside and University of New Hampshire groups are part of an international effort to develop and evaluate technologies relevant to a muon based neutrino source. The research project focuses particularly on the International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE), including beam emittance measurement and instrumentation for muon beams of large emittance. The team will participate in the hardware and software development, commissioning, operation, and data analysis of tracking detectors employed upstream and downstream of the MICE cooling channel set up at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to determine the reduction in emittance (cooling). One of the significant aspects of this program is the possibility for students, both undergraduate and graduate, to become involved in forefront accelerator physics research at universities.
