Workshop: Microscale Approaches to Macroscale Issues in Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology

In order to predict the impact of global changes onterrestrial ecosystems, it is becoming clear that specific study of the soil microbialcommunity must be included. However, this has been difficult to achievedue to: 1) technical challenges in studying what cannot beseen with the naked eye; and 2) differences in research approach of ecosystemversus microbial ecologists. Recent advances in methodsare making it possible to study soil microorganisms indetail, but how to best use the information to protectand manage ecosystems remains unclear. This workshop will bring together scientists from a range ofdisciplines to identify the most importantquestions about threats to ecosystems that requiremicrobiology to answer, and determine what strategiesand possible future techniques will allow scientists toanswer these questions? The workshop will be significant in gathering bothyoung and experienced visionary experts fromseveral scientific areas. One of the outcomes, inaddition to a concrete research agenda, will be thecreation of an interdisciplinary research communityand increased communication among science disciplines.Because issues in ecosystem ecology are rarelyconfined within a discipline, this type ofinterdisciplinary collaboration and communication iscritical for future efforts in global change research.
