We are helping to develop a scientific community that uses data from the strainmeters in the Plate Boundary Observatory component of EarthScope. The available PBO borehole strainmeter data strongly suggests that the simple models available do not fit the known signals from the Earth tides. We are developing methods and tools for finding the instrument response, and providing the community with descriptions and methods that will allow users to interpret the data more straightforwardly than is now possible. We are testing models that use different input signals (tides, air pressure loading, and seismic waves), and are Developing mechanical models for the observed behavior of borehole strainmeters, particularly their response to applied strain, including distortions from topography, and from fracturing near the borehole. We are continuing to develop two software packages, one (PIASD) for the analysis of strainmeter data and the other (SPOTL) for computing of ocean tidal loading.
