SuperMAG: The Global Magnetometer Initiative

The key goal of this project is the development of a web-based data service for ground-based magnetic perturbation data. Contributions to the project from a very large number of the existing magnetometer arrays worldwide have been contractually secured. Magnetic perturbation data with a 1-minute cadence, suitable for continual observation of ionospheric currents, will be collected and archived using automated cleaning, rotation, and baseline removal processes. The techniques will be tested and refined through application of the data to a variety of scientific data analysis studies. The initial dataset will span more than 200 stations and 10 years and future data will be added routinely. The resulting data set will be available to users via an adaptation of the data archive and web interface developed for the SuperDARN HF radar network. Advanced data products and visualizations tools will also be developed and added to the service.
