REU Site: Condensed Matter and Nonlinear Dynamics

The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site at the College of Wooster is affiliated with the Physics Department and has been continuously funded since 1994 by the Division of Materials Research, National Science Foundation. The aim of this summer program is to guide undergraduate students in cutting-edge research and motivate them to pursue science careers. Eight undergraduates from predominantly undergraduate institutions or students early in their college careers are recruited every year for this ten-week-long program. These students are closely mentored by faculty members and participate in research projects in the areas of condensed matter physics and nonlinear dynamics. Specific projects include critical phenomena in liquid mixtures, pattern formation, liquid crystals, cellular automata, stochastic resonance, and chaos in celestial mechanics. REU students also attend local research seminars, workshop on science research ethics, regional or national research conferences, and organized social activities in Wooster and nearby towns in Ohio.
