Upgrade of Brown Computing Facilities for Integrated Studies of Mantle Structure, Dynamics and Melting

This grant supports an upgrade of research computing facilities of four Brown Geological Sciences faculty with closely allied research interests in seismology, mantle geodynamics, and mantle melting processes (Karen Fischer, Don Forsyth, Yan Liang, and Marc Parmentier). A 32 processor, 16 node computer cluster will be purchased. The cluster will enable a variety of studies using parallelized versions of in-house developed codes as well as parallel codes for both seismic wave propagation and mantle dynamics that are (or will) become available through the NSF-sponsored Computational Infrastructure for Geodynamics (http://www.geodynamics.org). As part of this project, the University will support acquisition of a file storage system that will allow efficient access to large databases from recent, ongoing, and future seismic field experiments and other data such as the waveforms being generated by USArray. In addition to the research that will be enabled, these facilities will contribute to the education and research training of graduate and undergraduate students.
