Experimental Studies of Fundamental Symmetries

The High Energy Physics Group at the State University of New York atStony Brook is conducting research on the underlying causes for the breaking of the symmetry in the fundamental forces of nature. These are explored in two experimental programs: the mature D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron will more than quadruple its current data accumulation, allowing sensitive exploration of relatively light Higgs bosons and precision studies of known particles that could reveal departures from the Standard Model; and the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC which will begin operation in 2007, and should uncover the Standard Model Higgs boson and observe manifestations of the new physics. The proposed research will also support efforts to develop the International Linear Collider program with guidance to the government, oversight in the international community, and development of detector instrumentation for ILC experiments. Lastly, the proposed program will help develop the MARIACHI experiment that would place particle detectors in high schools across Long Island to detect extensive air showers induced by ultrahigh energy cosmic rays, together with centralized detection of radio signals bounced off the cosmic ray ionization trails high in the atmosphere. This program will bring frontline science and computing grids to the high schools, stimulating student interest in science and technology careers.
