The quantum optics group at the University of Maryland is investigating entanglement between atoms and light. The experiments study the dynamics of entanglement in a system that consists of an atom interacting with light inside an optical cavity; the so called cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) system. To protect the entanglement, quantum feedback will be implemented. The quantification of entanglement and the control of non-classical states will help elucidate the fragility of this fundamental resource necessary in the development of quantum information protocols. This project involves three graduate students in the area of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. The students will be part of the Joint Quantum Institute that brings to the University of Maryland internationally recognized scientist interested in the topics of quantum information and quantum coherence. The experiment involves undergraduates participating in the research effort during the academic year, and in the summer. In conjunction with the Sociedad Mexicana de Fisica, two Mexican undergraduates will spend two months in the laboratory.
