The project addresses two important open problems in ultracold atomic physics relatedto the general goals of quantum computation and quantum-limited precisionmeasurement: (I) developing a hybrid atom-photon interferometer for quantum-limitedmeasurements of environmental properties, and (II) developing Interaction-Freequantum gates for deterministic long distance teleportation of atomic qubits. Bothproblems make use of the fact that atoms are ideal qubits and/or probes of theenvironment,whereas photons are the best choice for transmitting quantum information.
