This award supports a workshop jointly sponsored by the NSF Engineering and Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorates, the NSF Office of Multidisciplinary Affairs, and the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC). The workshop discussions will address the basic research gaps and educational needs required to advance developments in small power sources for anti-terrorism activities. Participants from academia, industry, and government laboratories will contribute to discussions in five focus areas: (1) energy harvesting, (2) photovoltaics, (3) fuel cells, (4) batteries, and (5) systems integration, miniaturization, and packaging. The interdisciplinary cadre of engineers and scientists will become well informed regarding the current challenges and needs of the IC. A web-accessible report will describe energy capture, conversion, and storage as related to national security applications. These research topics also hold broad implications for the development of new, long-lived, portable devices in medicine, sensing, communications, and transportation.
