Francis CaseyNorth Dakota State University FargoAward No: CBET-0730492Effects of Animal Manure Storage and Disposal on the Fate andTransport of Manure-Borne HormonesThe long-term goal for this proposed research is two-fold. First, to clarify the role of intensive livestock production with respect to environmental exposure to hormones, information that is crucial to the assessment of risk from this industry. Secondly, evaluate the fate and transport potential of hormones with respect to commercially-employed livestock waste storage and disposal practices. This information is required to validate handling and disposal practices that can potentially mitigate the risk of hormones.Swine operations were chosen because they have some of the greatest potentials of all confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs; i.e. 1000 animal units), especially farrowing facilities (where pigs gestate and birth), to produce and contribute the most potent estrogens to the environment.
