AhluwaliaDMS-0753092 The investigators organize an annual conference on Frontiersin Applied and Computational Mathematics (FACM) on the campus ofthe New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, NewJersey. The conferences include the significant participation ofundergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, andjunior faculty. The FACM conference series has been organizedover the past four years by the Department of MathematicalSciences and the Center for Applied Mathematics and Statistics atNJIT and is partially funded through an NJIT Strategic InitiativePlan. The conference has become a leading forum for thedissemination of research in applied and computationalmathematics and applied statistics. The three year conferenceplan for 2008-2010 is as follows: FACM '08 is a large (250-300participants) general meeting in applied mathematics, involvingin particular mathematical biology, fluid dynamics, wavepropagation, and applied probability and statistics. FACM '09and '10 are smaller (125-150 participants) focused meetings onmathematical biology and fluid dynamics, respectively, which areareas of focus in the Department. This conference series brings together mathematicians,statisticians, physicists, engineers, and biologists to shareresults of their research in applied and computationalmathematics and applied statistics. The broader impacts are thatsignificant cross-fertilization takes place during and after theconferences between researchers in different disciplines whoutilize the methods of applied mathematics, statistics andnumerical computation. For students and postdocs, this is amajor learning experience that helps them with futurepresentations and research. For many of these students, such alocal research conference is their first exposure to high qualityresearch being undertaken at other research institutions. Thisexposure helps students strive to emulate the quality of theseresearch activities. Past FACM conferences have an excellentrecord of participation of women and underrepresented minorities,and special efforts are made to continue this trend.
