项目摘要

The investigators and their colleagues propose to organize anInternational Conference on Modeling and Simulation, which will beheld from July 9-12, 2008 in Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, ShaanxiProvince, China. In the last two decades, the rapid development ofcomputer power and sophisticated computational methodology haspermitted the application of high performance computing to simulationand modeling of unprecedented accuracy and scope applied to a widerange of important problems. These applications have had profoundimplications and applications in mathematics, science, engineering andindustry. Scientific computing is in fact the only feasible tool foranalyzing many different types of critical important phenomena such asflow and transport, weather prediction, wave propagation, novelmaterial design, computational chemistry, genome sequencing andanalysis. The proposed conference will bring prominent researchersfrom U.S. and Europe working in these active areas to Asia, as toenhance and facilitate contacts and dialogs between specialists ofdifferent fields dealing with modeling and simulation so that newconcepts can be discovered and new methodologies can express theirpower.In the past quarter of a century, along with rapid economicaldevelopments and advancements in the Far East Asian countries,particularly the phenomenal growth in China, there has been everincreasing collaborations between U.S.- and Asia-based (also betweenEurope- and Asia-based) researchers in all fields of scientificresearch. Such a phenomenon and trend is clearly exemplified by whathas taken place in mathematical sciences latterly (thanks to theeffort and initiatives of the NSF). These cross-continental researchcollaborations have already made a large impact on many fields ofscientific research, most noticeably, on the human genome sequencingproject in biological sciences and on the proof of the PoincareConjecture in mathematical sciences. The proposed conference will bea contribution to promoting, enhancing, and stimulating suchcross-continental research interactions and collaborations inmathematical sciences, more specifically, in applied and computationalmathematics,
