A high level of reliability of power systems is basis for productivity and prosperity of modern communities. The changes of power systems driven by CO2-reduced generation, increase of electrical energy transport and competitive energy market lead to an increased line loading and ongoing changes of network structures. The networks reach their physical and operational limits and become more and more complex. Numerous unintentional shutdowns of power supply in the near past are caused by malfunctions of protection systems. The protection systems are not adapted to the changing network conditions and complex network structures. Conventional methods of protection coordination are dedicated for local limited problems and cannot comply with the intentions described above.The goal of this research work are new methods of analysis and assessment of network and protection security for a predictive blackout avoidance. Network and protection system should be considered as an integral unity preventing malfunctions. Prerequisite is an overall system approach of network and protection system. It comprises an analysis and improvement of protection coordination of regional up to nationwide power grids. Based on routinely checks of fault scenarios, bottlenecks of coordination will be identified and analyzed preventively. Measures of improvement will be automatically calculated or derived by algorithms.Thus the proposed research project will make an important contribution for the preservation of network reliability in the presence of ongoing changes of power systems in the future.
