AbstractAward: DMS-0852734Principal Investigator: James A. Isenberg, Boris I. BotvinnikThis award provides partial support for meetings of the PacificNorthwest Geometry Seminar (PNGS) to be held during 2009--2012 atthe University of British Columbia, Oregon State University,University of Oregon, University of Utah, University ofWashington, Portland State University, and StanfordUniversity. Invited research talks by leading experts indifferential geometry and algebraic geometry are complemented bydiscussion sessions in which the speakers and participants assessthe state of various areas in geometry, and highlight openproblems in these areas.There are a number of very active researchers in geometryscattered throughout the various universities which are involvedin the Pacific Northwest Geometry Seminar. These periodicmeetings bring these researchers together for consultation,collaboration, and stimulation of new ideas. A significant numberof research programs have been initiated as a result ofinteractions at these meetings. The PNGS is especially valuablefor graduate students in geometry at the various participatinguniversities which have small geometry groups. The PNGS meetingsgive these students an excellent opportunity to see the broaderpicture of research in geometry. The meetings are also veryvaluable for the growing number of geometers working at some ofthe smaller universities in the region, such as PacificUniversity, Lewis and Clark, Seattle University, and IdahoState.
