In July 2009, the twenty-first international conference entitledFormal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (FPSAC) will be heldat the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation of the JohannesKepler University in Linz, Austria. As in the past, there will benine plenary speakers, about twenty-five contributed talks, and twoposter/software demonstration sessions. The continuing success of theannual FPSAC conferences stems in part from their considerableinterdisciplinary breadth---linking leading researchers incombinatorial mathematics with strong researchers in allied fieldssuch as pure and applied mathematics, computer science, physics, andbiology. The span of this conference series is unique amonginternational conferences with an emphasis on combinatorialmathematics.As well as its breadth, a second distinguishing characteristic ofFPSAC conferences is the concerted effort to recognize and encourageoutstanding young scientists. This is accomplished in part bychoosing at least one plenary speaker to be an ``emerging'' star andby ensuring that talented young researchers are well represented amongthe speakers selected for contributed talks. Another special featureof the FPSAC conferences is a continuing effort to emphasizeinclusiveness among participants. The conference seeks to drawsubstantial participation from groups which have been traditionallyunder-represented in the mathematical sciences. FPSAC 2009 will be anexcellent opportunity for these students and junior researchers tomake both domestic and international contacts that will be of greatvalue in their developing careers. This grant support theirattendence. Additionally, because of the variety of past locations(2008: Chile, 2007: China, for example), FPSAC draws a trulyinternational crowd.
