AbstractAward: DMS-0940878Principal Investigator: Gilbert A. Weinstein, Mohammad Ghomi, John E. McCuan, Vladimir I. Oliker, Fernando A. Schwartz The proposed program continues in expanded format a multi-year aseries of semiannual one-day events focussing on geometricanalysis titled Southeast Geometry Seminar (SGS). These eventswill be hosted in rotation by the following institutions: TheUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham, The Georgia Institute ofTechnology, Emory University, and The University of TennesseeKnoxville. Five speakers will be invited for each event. Aposter session will be hosted. Annual proceedings, including anopen problems section, will be published. The main goal of theseshort and frequent meetings will be to attract researchers andstudents, working in geometry and related fields, who can travelto the sites above at a relatively low financial cost, and tofoster collaboration between neighboring geometric analysisresearch groups.Geometric analysis is at the intersection of a number ofimportant fields of mathematics and mathematical physics. It hasenjoyed a fast growing interest in recent years, partly due tothe interaction with other scientific and technological fields.The activities proposed are aimed at fostering collaborationbetween geometers and researchers in related fields in thesoutheast. SGS has been running for seven years and has had anstrong impact on geometric analysis in the southeast. Acontinuation of this program will assure that geometry researchgroups at participating institutions and other neighboringinstitutions grow further, and attract graduate students andpost-doctoral trainees. The training of these young researcherswill supply personnel needed in this area both for academicpositions and in related technological and scientificdisciplines.The website for the conference series is:http://www.math.uab.edu/sgs/
