In this project the interplay between the thermal transport and magnetic microstructure (domains and domain walls) in magnetic films is investigated. Spin currents are generated by applying temperature gradients across extended films and stripes in a magnetic field and they are de-tected by the Inverse Spin Hall Effect. At the same time the magnetic domain structure is in-situ manipulated and controlled by digitally enhanced Kerr microscopy. The influence of magnetic microstructure on thermo-spin effects (such as the spin Seebeck effect) is studied by systematic variation of the domain structure in external magnetic fields, by tuning magnetic anisotropies and by selecting specific materials (Permalloy, Heusler alloys and magnetic garnet films). In the same setup the influence of thermal spin current on domain walls is studied. Besides the thermo-spin effects, conventional, potentially “parasitic” (magneto)-caloric transport effects (Nernst effect, thermopower etc.) are systematically measured.
