Aim of the project is to create a numismatic web portal dedicated to the region of ancient Thrace. It will collect and publish the scattered ancient coins of a region in an open-access SQL database. The core of the database consists of a collection of plaster casts of Thracian coins, put together by "Das Griechische Münzwerk", a longterm project of the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, as well as the pertinent coins of the "Münzkabinett", the Numismatic Collection of the National Museums in Berlin. The editorially supervised website will allow other museums and collections – nationally and internationally – to identify their holdings and publish them digitally. The web portal will meet widely different needs (linguistic, structural, and thematic). Thus, we will develop an international standard for the cross-disciplinary search for numismatic information. For the first time in numismatics a connection of an object-relational database with an issue-oriented network will be established, a project, for which coins as serial objects are particularly suited. The pilot project will take advantage of the expertise and experience of both institutions in scientific analysis and web-based publication to make available a unique stock of information and interconnect it with relevant international web portals.
