One of the driving factors for today's knowledge society is the free and individual access to high quality scientific information. The open access movement tries to publish an increasing number of scientific results, resulting however in a hard to manage variety of freely accessible articles in a growing number of journals. In contrast to classical libraries and publishing houses, a major drawback for open access journals is the missing business model, which in turn does not allow for revenue to be used for semantic indexing and manually curated metadata annotation of valuable scientific results. Thus, a truly personalized access is hard to realize. First steps into this direction can be seen in the area of medicine with portals like GoPubMed, where the manually curated MeSH taxonomy provides a high quality tool for indexing documents. Unfortunately most scientific areas are lacking such a powerful tool for indexing and thus automatic indexing is still extremely difficult. This project aims at the development and implementation of methods that allow open access information providers particularly in the area of chemistry to automatically index their collections with controlled quality. The second part of the project will use these metadata for building modular personalized retrieval portals. Thus, the overall aim is to lay the foundations for an innovative and service-oriented framework for open access journals that allow for a personalized and quality controlled retrieval process reflecting the user's individual knowledge space.
