The main objective of the project is to develop process oriented methods to configure small machine tools for micro milling small workpieces. After finishing the design of the feed axis, which was the integral part of the first working period, several modules will be combined into a working machine. Thereby existing dogmas of the construction of conventional machine tools have to be overcome to meet the requirements of miniaturization. The effects and conditions of manufacturing small workpieces have to be considered further. Hence, the geometry of the workpiece and the micro milling process will be analyzed and described without regarding the required modules to develop new machine configurations and machine kinematics. Based on this, suitable combinations of modules will be derived and examined via simulation to ensure the basic fitness. A priority concept will be designed in detail and metrological examined after built up. Through the subsequent manufacturing of demonstrator- workpieces, defined within the SPP 1476, the capability of the concept will be proved. As a result of the project methods to develop micro milling machines for small workpieces will be generated. This method can further be established to be used for other processes.
