De-Stalinization in Barnaul and the Altai Region, 1953-1964

The history, results and significance of the de-Stalinization betweenStalin's death in 1953 and the fall of Chruscev in 1964 are now largelyknown. It is unclear how this process of transformation took place inthe province, whether, in what way and with what consequences forthe local society the separation from Stalinism performed. To getaway from the central Moscow perspective, were selected the city andthe surrounding area of Barnaul in the Altai region. Barnaul was aplace where the political, social and economic processes of de-Stalinization unfolded with full force. The project investigates theseconnections in their local contexts. It combines methodologicalaspects of social history with micro-historical and everyday-historicalapproaches. On the basis of archival materials and materials of local,official and private origin (memoirs, diaries, letters, photos), theresearch project aims to investigate the process of de-Stalinization, itsactors and the effects of de-Stalinization on local institutions and localsociety.
