Almost all materials can be evaporated by means of femtosecond laser ablation. In a liquid medium the ablated material crystallises in nanoparticles of approximately 10-100 nm in diameter, which can be homogeneously suspended in the liquid. Iron-based nanoparticles may form different structures (e.g. core-shell structures) or vary their magnetic properties depending on the laser parameters or on the characteristics of the liquid environment. This makes the iron-based nanoparticles interesting e.g. for applications in biomedical science. In this project we want to find out how to control the size distribution, stoichiometry and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles by variation of laser parameters and the liquid medium, in which the particles are produced. Experiments should reveal, in which way the liquid medium influences the size and chemical composition of the nanoparticles, influences of the laser parameters and of the liquid media should be treated separately.
