Observation of spurious forces (A06)

Within the first funding phase of geo-Q, the development of a sensitive torsion balance has been initiated. Our aim is to create an environment that is free of spurious forces at the 10-13-10-14 ms-2/√Hz level in one horizontal degrees of freedom. This environment will enable the development of test mass sensing systems and respective performance testing at that level. Our torsion balance will include sensing of the pendulum motion and the experimental platform via laser interferometric readout schemes and novel opto-mechanical acceleration sensors for increased sensitivity and reduced back-action.
