The Grand Master´s Palace on Marienburg/Malbork. Residential architecture of the Teutonic Order on the way to courtly lifing style. Symbolic architecture of cultural heritage preservation and Prussian patriotism.

The palace of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights, built at the end of 14th century, is one of the outstanding late-medieval residence buildings in Europe. It impresses not only by the modernity of its architectural features but also by a sophisticated interior structure combining representational purposes, administrative requirements and private living. The building, which has been preserved almost completely up to this day, shall be monographically opened up by way of a detailed documentation (room book) and analysis and be related to European residence buildings. Furthermore, the role of the Grand Master´s Palace for the development of the modern idea of cultural heritage at about 1800 must be researched; this holds particularly for the way in which Marienburg influenced the works Friedrich Gilly and Karl Friedrich Schinkel (rediscovery of the face brick as a building material, development of the neo-Gothic style), both of whom dealtintensively with the architecture of the Grand Master´s Palace).
