The effective non-covalent recognition of Synthetic Carbon Allotropes (SCAs) poses a considerable challenge to the supramolecular chemist, because these organic materials are partially polydisperse, lack heteroatoms and are inherently apolar or curved. In project A7, we will develop innovative concepts and compounds for the supramolecular recognition and functionalization of fullerenes (with strained carbon “nanohoops”; work package 1), single-walled carbon nanotubes (with dynamic covalent macrocycles; work package 2) and graphene edge defects (with bis-amidinium molecular wires; work package 3).
