今年度は、新型コロナウィルスの世界規模での拡大により、当初予定していたフィールド調査を実施することができなかった。そこで、研究手法を文献調査及びオンライン調査に切り替えた。具体的には以下のように研究を進めた。1）東インドネシア及びスンバ島を対象とした民族誌・人類学に関して、特に社会階層と慣習儀礼の交換財に関する議論に焦点をあて検討した。その結果、東スンバ社会を対象とした研究において、従来は親族集団間で交換される財として論じられてきた馬が、単なる財ではなく、持ち主の一部として人格化される対象でもあることが分かった。こうした馬の両義性に関する人びとの認識がどの程度東スンバ全体に広がっているのかは今後さらなる検討が必要である。また、この研究を進める過程で、東スンバにおける馬と奴隷に関する議論に接点を見出すことができた。東スンバにおける奴隷は、馬と同じく財としてだけでなく、主人の一部として人格化される対象でもあった。そこで、社会的な位置づけとして両義性を備える馬と奴隷を併せて検討することで、本研究の目的をより深めることができる見込みである。2)「幸運をもたらす馬」に関して、これまでフィールド調査で知り合った東スンバの人びととSNSを通じたオンライン調査を実施した。その結果、調査村落においては、「幸運をもたらす馬」が人びとの間で認識されていることが判明した。今後は、こうした馬に関する認識がどの程度階層を越えて一般化されているのか、また東スンバ全体でどの程度共有されているのかといった点について検討が必要である。3）経済人類学に関する民族誌資料を検討した。特に、2021年に刊行された民族誌のなかから、本研究と関連する議論を提示している文献について書評を執筆した。執筆した書評は『文化人類学』86(3)に掲載された。
