『易経古義』の二種稿本「自筆本」と「改修本」について、両本の中間形態を示すとされる「林本」をも参照しつつ、その成立過程の分析を行い、『易経古義』仁斎生前最終形態のテキスト確定を行った。その結果として、従来中間形態を示すとされていた林本こそが仁斎生前の最終稿本である可能性が高いと推測されるに至った。内容的には、『周易本義』に集約される朱熹の『易』解釈は、基本的に『易』を占いの書と見るものであるが、注目すべきは、朱熹が（とりわけ繋辞伝に）その宇宙論的哲学、ひいては形而上学の論拠を求めたことにある。これに対して仁斎は、「周易は本と卜筮の書」としながらも、「彖・象及び文言は儒家の易也。繋辞・説卦は筮家の易也。」（『語孟字義』）として、『易』のうち「専ら陰陽消長の変を明す」ものとしての彖伝、象伝及び文言伝のみを評価し、それを「儒家の易」と位置づけるとともに、朱熹が重視した繋辞伝を「卜筮の易」として否定した。仁斎によれば、「儒家の易」は「義」を述べるものであり、「義と卜筮と相反す」と考えたのである。さらに仁斎はそうした「儒家の易」の本質を「盈満を避けて退損に処る」ことに求め、それが『論語』の、例えば「礼は其の奢らんよりは寧ろ倹せよ」や、『孝経』の「節を制し度を謹めば、満ちて溢れず、高うして危うからず」と同一のものと捉えている。ここに仁斎のいわゆる「天地は一大活物」とする活物観の一端が窺えるとともに、宋学的な形而上学を否定した仁斎学の特徴を見ることができる。また、いわゆる「十翼」の成立に関しても、それが孔子以前の成立である事など、独自の主張が展開されていることが明らかとなった。
