近世以来、フランスはヨーロッパの中心たる大国となり、優れた美術作品が多数生み出され、それに伴い先進的な美術愛好家たちが活躍して受容層もいっそう豊かに拡大した。風景画は、とりわけ19世紀以降に発展して近代絵画の一大ジャンルを形成することになるが、18世紀には徐々に新しいテーマや表現が芽生え、やがて美術愛好家たちに熱心に注文・購入されて人気を誇るようになる。本研究は、従来等閑視されてきた美術愛好家を中心とした素人のたしなみとしての風景画制作が、自然に対する新たな感覚や趣味を育み、風景画家たちの作品制作ならびに風景画ジャンルの興隆・発展を促し、影響を与えたことを明らかにしようと試みるものである。本年度は、前年度に引き続き、この時代の主要な風景画家の画業と評価とともに、美術愛好家の作品制作の調査考察を進めた。ジョゼフ・ヴェルネ、ユベール・ロベールら個別の画家の評伝の他、戸外制作にかんする一次史料、二次文献、作品画像の収集を継続した。ロジェ・ド・ピールによる美術理論書中の風景画論、ペルネティ、ラコンブ、ヴァトレらが編纂・執筆した美術事典の項目を中心として、風景画とそれに関連する用語の概念や定義、評価の変遷を検討した。また、先進的な風景画が発展し、素人による制作の実践も進んでいたイギリス絵画の動向も視野にいれつつ資料収集に努めた。前年度から行ってきたヴェルネの作品評価の分析をまとめ、マリエットによるこの画家の評伝の翻訳・解題を予定通り執筆して報告した。また、前年度に公刊した著作の一部をもとに、美術愛好家の作品制作を内容に含む講演を行った。以上の調査研究を通じて、地誌的風景画がジャンルとして発展し、風景画ジャンルの中で重要な位置を占めるようになることが確認できた。今後は地誌的なテーマによる美術愛好家の制作に留意して調査を進めたい。
