本研究は、九州北部の霊山に伝わる、尊像を主とする文物を調査し、山と神仏習合、地方展開、大陸渡来文物受容等の問題について、考察の深化を図るものである。2021年度においては、九州北西部の重要作例の精査を重ね、その成果を反映させた特別展を開催したが、その際、山が神仏など異なる存在を結ぶことができるのは、一つには、そこが双方が求める浄地だったからだと考えた。しかしもちろん、他にも様々な要素が関係していると思われ、2022年度はそれを意識しつつ調査研究を進めた。作品調査については、福岡県内では、宗像市鎮国寺奥の院の秘仏石造不動明王立像、久留米市朝日寺の神子栄尊像、高良山伝来の可能性がある福聚寺の聖観音立像の精査等を、県外では長崎県諫早市天祐寺の傅大士像の精査、鹿児島県の薩摩塔に刻まれた尊像の改めての確認調査等を行っている。神子栄尊像は既に周知の作例であるが、従来構造等の詳細は明らかでなかったため、九州国立博物館の協力を受けてX線CTスキャナによる調査を行ったものである。九州の霊山における渡来文物移入には、入宋僧が小さからぬ役割を果たしたことが想定され、中でも最近は、異なる個性と経歴をもった重源や神子栄尊に注目している。彼らを通して渡来文物の移入や、山での受容について立体的に浮かび上がらせたいと考えている。まずは九州北部に広く足跡を残す神子栄尊から進めるが、重源については、中央と地方の交流の観点からも重要な存在だと目され、続けて取り組みたい。調査の他、九州北部の霊山の様相を他地域と比較して考えるべく、関東、関西、山陰の霊山や聖地の視察も行っている。2022年度においては、2021年度に行った調査研究の流れを受けて作品調査を続けながら、列島内における比較や、大陸との結びつきのあり方について改めて考えてみた。それは最終年度における調査研究と、その報告の方向性を具体的に見定めるためである。
