日本刀に関する美術工芸的な研究は、主に刀身の姿・地鉄・刃文・銘の特徴を総合して行われる。しかし、日本刀の観察や記録には高度な技術が必要である上、従来の方法では精度や情報共有に限界があり、日本刀研究の深化と学際化を図る上で喫緊の課題となっている。本研究では、その解決策としてスキャナーを用いて刀身の高精細画像を作成する。そして、質量ともに国内最高水準である東京国立博物館所蔵の日本刀を対象に画像データを集積し、姿・地鉄・刃文・銘の総合的かつ定量的な分析と比較によって、日本刀研究の基準資料としてデータベース化する。これらの活用により、日本刀研究全体の発展に寄与することが期待できると共に、画像データの公開など様々な形で成果を社会に還元することを目的とする。具体的な作業として、Ａ３判フラットヘッドスキャナーの上面に大型（120×40㎝）の高透過ガラス板を設置し、その上面に日本刀の刀身を載せる。そして2400dpi（5291×5291px、約2800万画素）の解像度でスキャニングを行う。刀身の長さがＡ３判を超える場合は刀身を載せた高透過ガラス板を並行にスライドさせ、刀身全体を２～３分割してスキャニングする。その後、パソコンで画像処理ソフトを用いて合成や補正を行って刀身の画像を完成させる。２年目となる今年度は、研究機材のうちソフトフェアを更新し、研究対象として東京国立博物館所蔵の日本刀のうち備前刀を取り上げ、画像の作成と分析を継続した。備前国（岡山県）は国内最大の刀剣産地で、平安～江戸時代まで長期にわたり多数の刀剣龍はが多種多様な刀剣を製作しており、研究材料として最適である。今年度は、備前刀の中でも末備前と呼ばれる戦国時代の備前刀を中心に作風の共通点と相違点を分析し、その特徴を整理した。
