令和4年度は、ジョージ・ウィルキンズ、ジョン・ディーおよびウィリアム・ローリーの合作による『英国三兄弟の旅』(1607年執筆）とジョン・フレッチャー作『島の王女』(1621年執筆)を対象として、なぜキリスト教徒が異教徒を改宗させたのかについて、当時の歴史資料や現存する公文書などをもとに分析を行った。分析の結果、ウィルキンズほか作『英国三兄弟の旅』においては、イングランドとペルシャとの同盟関係を築こうとするシャーリー家の三男ロバートが皇帝アッバース一世の姪との結婚と、キリスト教会と教育施設の設立を通して、同国のキリスト教化による同盟をもくろむプロセスを明らかにした。また、フレッチャー作『島の王女』においては、武力をともなうポルトガルの重商主義を通して、主人公アーミュジアが香料諸島の一つテルナテ島の王女キザーラをキリスト教に改宗させて結婚し、同島を植民地化するプロセスを明らかにした。武力と改宗を背景としたポルトガル人の植民地化は、本劇が執筆された当時の同国の植民地政策と重なり合うことも見出した。劇作家たちが描く舞台には、改宗を同盟関係の構築や植民地政策に利用する人たちの戦略が映し出されていると結論した。これらの戦略は、改宗に消極的なイングランドの海外貿易や植民地政策とは著しく異なることを確認した。このあたりに、イングランドの改宗政策の実際を見出した。劇作家たちは、グローバルに展開するポルトガルやスペインなどの武力と改宗による植民地化をステュアート朝イングランド人に示したのであった。
