项目摘要

本研究は、これまで米文学・文化研究領域において、ほぼ注目されずにきた、19世紀初頭の南部における奴隷叛乱事件（ガブリエルの叛乱〔あるいはガブリエル・プロッサーの叛乱、ヴァージニア州リッチモンド、1800年〕とデンマーク・ヴィージーの叛乱〔サウス・カロライナ州チャールストン、1822年〕）につき、概要と背景の説明に加え、その文学的・文化的影響について考察することを目的としている。具体的には、①事件の歴史的背景と概要、事件後の影響の提示、②裁判記録の読解と当時の政治状況との連関、③小説および文学作品内の表象についての考察、④大衆のフォークロア形成と博物館等の記録／記憶提示とその効果、⑤これら奴隷制の残滓に直結するモニュメント建立と撤去、およびその功罪についての分析、解釈を行うものである。2022（令和4）年度については、１）プロッサーの叛乱概要と党派対立の背景を巡る裁判記録処理についての先行研究考察、および文学表象を紹介する論文（共著）の出版、２）ナット・ターナーを含む奴隷叛乱事件に関する歴史記述と文学表象との不／可分性についての学会発表（シンポジウム）、３）奴隷制度とリンカン大統領に関する南部再建期ロマンスについての部門研究会での口頭発表、４）スミソニアン博物館（ワシントンDC）および南部連合の英雄像の撤去跡地（リッチモンド）におけるリサーチ、５）その他、本件研究内容を敷衍した翻訳企画の提案を行った。こうした研究の進捗に伴い、５）について言えば、本件研究に深く関わると同時に、一般読者に向けてもインパクトがあると思しき翻訳のプルジェクトを行いつつある。南部奴隷制下における女性主人の在り方を巡って、従来考えられていた補助的かつ副次的な役割ではなく、主体的奴隷主として法的に財産保有者となる事例研究を詳述した研究書の翻訳を、今後、同時並行的に進めていくことが確定している。
