報告者は、2018年度から2022年度にかけて、基盤研究（C)「「日系市民」と日本語教育ー戦前・戦中期の米国西海岸を中心に」を別途、実施してきた。当初は2020年度に終了する予定であったが、コロナウィルスの感染が収まらない状況下、現地調査が実施できず、2022年度まで2年間延長した。本研究課題は、この延長された研究課題を継承・発展させることを当初意図していたが、2021年度・22年度については、実施年度が重複することになった。2022年度は、 8月28日-31日にスタンフォード大学フーバー研究所、9月1日-4日：ワシントン大学シアトル校で文献調査を実施した。本研究課題が対象としている戦時中の日系人がおかれていた言語維持・継承状況を知る上で、たとえばスタンフォード大学が強制収容所内での教育プログラムを"Proposed Curriculum Procedures for Japanese Relocation Centers"として夏期プログラムにおいて策定したオリジナル文書など貴重な資料に触れることができた。また、本研究課題においては、戦中期の強制収容所の他に内陸山間部およびハワイにおける戦時下の言語・文化の維持・継承についても調査することを計画している。内陸山間部については、未だ手つかずの状況ではあるが、ハワイについてはハワイ島ヒロを中心に以前から聞き取り調査を実施しており、今年度も3月に5日間ほど人間文化研究機構・国立国語研究所の日本関連在外資料調査研究 「ハワイにおける日系社会資料に関する資料調査と社会調査の融合的研究」　プロジェクトの共同研究者として、ハワイ島ヒロにある布哇日系人會舘での資料整理に関わった。その過程で、戦時下のハワイにおける状況についても調査の手がかりを得ることが出来た。
