本研究は、宮島に伝来する文書のうち、これまで活字化されていなかった近世文書（「大願寺文書」及び「野坂文書」）について調査し、目録を作成して分析することにより、近世における厳島神社や大願寺の継承と変質を明らかにしようとするものである。研究の計画段階では、昨年度までにおおよその古文書の調査を終え、所蔵者と相談の上で当該研究に関わる近世文書を選別・撮影する予定であった。しかし、新型コロナウイルスの感染対策等のために、昨年度は調査を長期間中断することとなり、十分な機会を得られない状態となった。今年度は、大願寺文書に関する調査を実現することがだきたが、野坂文書については調査が実施できなかった。このような状況の中で、まず大願寺が所蔵する「大願寺文書」については、昨年度までに保管箱「町史箱一」～「町史箱八」に保管されていたすべての近世文書（750通）の撮影を終えることができたため、当該年度中に近世文書の所蔵目録を作成することができた。また、計画段階では想定していなかった「町史箱一」～「町史箱八」の他に別置保管されていた大鳥居関係文書も所蔵目録を作成することができた。さらに、撮影した写真データを基に、近世文書の中から当該研究に直接関係する文書を選別し、行事祭礼に係る文書は大知、政治史に係る文書は研究分担者である秋山伸隆氏、経済史に係る文書は同じく研究分担者である本多博之氏とともに翻刻作業を進める見通しを立てた。野坂文書については、「若手研究・19K13340、研究代表者：大知」の成果を基に作成した仮目録を手掛かりに、当該研究に必要な文書の選別作業を進めたが、当該年度中に調査の機会を得ることができなかった。
