本研究は、15世紀後半から17世紀前半における日本貨幣史の叙述を、古貨幣（歴史上の貨幣で現在は通用しないもの）を主な典拠とする古貨幣学的方法と、文献史料上の情報を主な典拠とする文献史学的方法とを総合することにより、再構築することを目指す。全体像としては、日本の中世・近世移行期における貨幣現物の使用の実態を復元し、そのありようが当時の経済・社会状況へ与えた影響を分析する。方法論的には、古貨幣すなわち実際に授受された貨幣現物を主な典拠とする。これにより、文献史料上の情報を主な典拠としてきた従来の貨幣史研究の成果を相対化する。加えて、当時、貨幣現物の素材・形態としてなぜそれを選んだのか、その理由の歴史的特徴、ならびにその選択をした結果が社会へ与えた影響を考察する。これら作業により、日本の中世・近世移行期は三貨制度、すなわち三つの単位体系が併存しながらも、それら相互の交換比を政府が定義する、全体五をゆるやかに統合するシステム、すなわち現代日本の円単位による統一貨幣システムとは異なる統合のありようが成立する時期である。その経緯と実態を復元し現在とは異なる貨幣システムを提示することで現在の貨幣システムを相対化することを目指す。当該年度には当時の金属貨幣現物に即した、その流通実態の全体像を整理する論考を発表した。また、国際学会における口頭報告の形で、得られた知見の国際的共有を行った。加えて、これらの副産物として、庶民の生産・分業の実態とそれを媒介する貨幣の実態（貨幣現物に関する考古学的知見に基づく分析を含む）、ならびにその背景にある生態系との関係を分析する著書を発表した。加えて、史料収蔵機関が収蔵する古貨幣資料、とくに大阪経済大学日本経済史研究所所蔵古紙幣の調査・整理を行った（論考未発表）。
