项目摘要

本研究は、近世のブリテン帝国史に、複合国家論や英米交流史、英米宗教史の視点を取り入れ、ピューリタン革命や名誉革命の情報がアメリカ植民地に伝播し、17世紀の二つの革命が18世紀の独立革命へと連鎖したことを解明するものである。そのため2022年度は、オンライン史料集のEarly American Imprintsなどを使用しながら、ピューリタン革命を導いたイングランドの宗教思想、わけてもピューリタニズムが北米の植民地に渡り、「コモンウェルス」と呼ばれた自治的で共同体的な植民地建設に貢献したことを探究した。この点は、17世紀のピューリタン革命と名誉革命が、18世紀のアメリカ独立革命に受容されたプロセスを解明した2021年度の研究を継承するものである。2021年度は1750年1月30日のチャールズ１世処刑百周年記念日になされた説教史料を中心に分析・考察したが、2022年度は時代を少し遡り、17世紀から18世紀前半における英米の宗教的伝播と交流を検討した。本年度の主たる研究成果は、2022年6月18日の日本ピューリタニズム学会第17回研究大会における特別講演「英米のピューリタニズムとコモンウェルス」として発表された。それを加筆訂正した論考「英米のピューリタニズムとコモンウェルス」(『ピューリタニズム研究』17号、2023年3月)も特筆すべきである。また、2022年5月に出版された岩井淳・山﨑耕一編『比較革命史の新地平』(山川出版社)の第1章「イギリス革命とフランス革命をつなぐ」(岩井淳)においてもピューリタン革命とフランス革命を関連づける中で、ピューリタン革命・名誉革命・独立革命という3者の密接な関係に言及した。こうしたテーマを発展させ、今後も17世紀の二つの革命を18世紀の独立革命へと繋げる研究を続けたい。
