令和４年度の研究実績で、令和３年度から持ち越した研究計画として、男女別の自殺要因の分析がある。2020年から全世界に影響をおよぼした新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大は、日本の自殺傾向にも影響を与えてきたことが徐々に明らかとなり、とりわけ男性と女性では別様に影響している可能性が示唆された。そこで、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大を抑制するための様々な規制が、社会経済的要因の変化を媒介として、どのように男女の自殺傾向に影響をおよぼしているかという観点から分析を進めた。2010年からは減少傾向に転じた日本の自殺者数は2019年には20,169人と2万人を割り込む直前までとなったが、2020年には21,081人と反転して増加した。この反転現象は、2019年の6,091人から2020年の7,026人へと935人(15.4%)の増加を示した女性の自殺によるもので、男性の自殺者数は減少傾向を維持したままであった。2019年と比較した2020年の女性の年齢別自殺率は、80～84歳をのぞくすべての年齢層で増加しており、特に20～24歳では人口10万人当たり10.1から14.3へと40%以上も増加した。また、過去5年間の平均と比較して2020年に自殺者数が増えた女性の属性は、平日に職場や学校に通勤・通学している比較的若い年齢層であった。このような変化の背景にある要因として、女性は男性と比較して行動制限による他者との対面的接触の減少が自殺傾向をより促していることを、自殺の社会統合理論を用いて説明したが、論拠としたデータは2003年および2005年の自殺率とソーシャル・キャピタル指数の関連、2015年の自殺率と労働時間の関連についての地域別統計にとどまった。
