本研究はこれまで学術・専門知識の習得を重要視してきた理工系教育に、語学、異文化への適応・対応スキル等を習得する国際教育分野のカリキュラムを加えることで日本の理工系学生に特化した国際競争力向上に寄与する教育モデルを構築することを目的としている。今年度は夏に北米、欧州で開催した短期留学に参加した理工系学生26名を対象に調査をおこなった。具体的に、渡航1ヶ月前に留学に行く理由を含むアンケート調査を実施し、さらに帰国後は留学にて得たこと、今後のキャリアについての調査をした。多くの学生が、理工系学生の留学は就職活動やキャリアアップで大きなアドバンテージになる、留学は海外の最先端の技術や研究に触れることができるよい機会になる、と回答した一方で、一般的に見ると理工系学生向けの留学プログラムは豊富ではないと感じる、留学生と交流する機会をもっと大学で設けてほしい、などの回答も目立った。さらに、所属学部、学科で留学や国際活動を推進している雰囲気があまりないこと、交換留学などで卒業を延長することは理工系学生にとって就活などで不利になると感じている学生もいたことが判明した。日本では海外と比較して理工系学生への国際教育の実践事例や研究が少ないため、本研究による調査は今後の参考になると考える。また、「理工系学生が積極的に留学に行くにはどのような制度や支援があれば良いと思いますか。大学ができることなども含め、教えてください」への回答で最も多かったのは費用に関することで、11名が経済・金銭面について言及した。経済的な問題が留学の阻害要因となることは日本人STEM生の留学について調査した別の結果でも言及されており、各大学は国への奨学金申請を行ったり、大学独自の奨学金を設立したりして学生支援をおこなっている。本学も支援を行なっているが、国全体での支援が不可欠である。
