22年度もコロナウイルス感染症予防の観点から本実験の実施は困難であった。そこで，園長を務めた附属幼稚園の子どもに可能な範囲で予備実験を実施した。幼児（3，4，5，6歳児）に言語課題を行い，材料の妥当性や実施手順を確認した。言語課題は代案命名，文脈手がかり，二重の3種類である。代案命名は，2つの異なる呼び方が可能な物（例えば，にんじん/野菜例えば，にんじん/野菜など，カテゴリ名とその一事例）を命名する課題である。2つの名前のうち1つ（”にんじん”）を実験者が使った場合に，子どもがもう一方（”野菜”）で名付けられるかを調べた。文脈手がかり課題では，既に知っている物でも文脈に従った異なる別の呼び方を許すことができるかを調べた。既知物（例えば，りんご）と未知物（例えば，絞り器）の対を提示し，文脈手がかり（”太郎はお腹がすいた”）を与えた後，提示物に対して無意味語（例えば，”ヘク”）を使った指示（“太郎にヘクを渡してあげて”）で，子どもが未知物と既知物どちらを選ぶかを確認した。二重課題は同じ1つの物が異なる名前を持ちうることの理解である。1つの標的未知項目（例えば，チーズ削り器）を2人の登場人物がそれぞれ別の無意味語（例えば，“リニ”と“ラソ”）で呼んだ後，子どもに4つの対象物（既知妨害項目2つ，未知妨害項目1つ，標的）の中から各人物の指示（“リニにはどれかな？”および “ラソはどれかな？”）に対して正しく同じ標的を選べるか否かを調べた。予備実験はまだデータ数が不十分なものの，用意した言語課題の材料はいずれも年長児だけでなく3歳児にも理解可能であることが概ね確認できた。
