見慣れた肌の色を持つ自人種よりも他人種の顔を区別するのは難しい（他人種効果）が，キャラクターやアバターの外見を変えることによって，ユーザの考え方（偏見など）や行動に影響を与えることが示唆されている（プロテウス効果）。本研究は，①モーフィング技術（平均顔）を用いて，自分の顔らしさ，ならびに②肌の色などの外見を変化させることによって，顔の印象（実験１）と潜在的偏見に及ぼす影響について（実験２），また③自尊心などの性格特性による影響について（実験３），さらに④VR事態下での影響について（実験４），検討する。実験１では，実験参加者に自分の顔を撮影したものを提供してもらい，自己顔とした。白色人種，黒色人種，黄色人種の顔に自己顔有と無しでそれぞれ平均顔を作成し，自己顔の有無が人種ごとの平均顔の印象に及ぼす効果についてオンライン実験で検討した。その結果，肌の色や自分の顔の類似性の度合いによって印象が異なることが示唆された。特に，自分に似ている平均顔については，人種の肌の色に関わらず，印象度が低くなったことから，自己顔に対する一種の不気味の谷現象が生じた可能性が示唆された。実験２では，オンラインによる潜在連合テスト（IAT）を用いた研究より，IATの D スコアがマイナスを示したことから，他人種に対して潜在的な回避傾向が示された。実験３では，仮想的有能感尺度や自尊感情尺度をオンライン実験で課し，その後IATとの関連性について検討した結果， IATのD スコアと仮想的有能感尺度得点との間には弱い相関がみられたが，自尊感情尺度得点とIAT,仮想的有能感尺度得点と自尊感情尺度得点間には相関はみられなかった。これらのことから，仮想的有能感は潜在的な偏見や差別意識の指標として有効である可能性が示唆された。実験４については，VR事態下でのアバターによる実験を行うため，現在準備中である。
