2022年5月、7月に長崎県五島列島南方海域でマッコウクジラの調査を行った。これらの調査で12頭が個体識別された。このうち1頭は2年前に初識別された個体で、4頭は1年前に初めて識別された個体、残りの7頭は今回初めて識別された個体だった。それ以前に識別されていた個体の来遊はなく、5年以上にわたって識別されてきた個体が来遊しなかった。これらの個体が別海域に初夏の採餌海域を移動した可能性がある。2013年以降に得られた個体識別記録をもとに社会分析を行った。1時間以内に識別された個体は互いに同伴しているとみなし、個体対ごとに半加重同伴指数を算出した。5日以上識別された個体の平均同伴指数の平均値（他個体と同伴している時間の割合の推定値）は0.10であった。また、ある時点で個体XとYが同伴していた時に、任意の遅延時間後にXの同伴者が再びYである確率である標準化遅延同伴率を算出したところ、標準化遅延同伴率は時間経過とともに低下したが、調査期間を通して帰無水準（すべての同伴がランダムに生じた場合の同伴指数）よりも高い値を示した。標準化遅延同伴率の最適モデルからは、個体の同伴には長期的な関係と数ヶ月程度の一時的な関係が含まれていることが示された。これらの結果は、若いオスのマッコウクジラには長期間に渡る個体間関係が存在することを示唆している。これまでに採取した9個体分のバイオプシーサンプルからDNAを抽出し、ミトコンドリアDNAの1032bpをもとに7個体について母系の判定を試みた。その結果、同じハプロタイプを持つものは3個体で、系統的にかなり遠いハプロタイプを持つ個体もあった。ハプロタイプの共有と社会的な関係は必ずしも一致しておらず、オスのマッコウクジラの集団は異なるメスのユニットを出自とする個体が集合して作られることを示唆している。
