The project aims the question which functions coins and fragmented silver as well jewellery and ingots did have in the Eastern parts of Central Europe between 800 and 1200. Were they reduced only on using in long-distance trade markets or did they circulate also in regional and local trade? How can we "measure" the level of monetization or speak of commercialization? Which processes did take place in which regions in the 9th-12th centuries? Do the hoards with fragmented silver found far away from the trade emporia indicate economic functions, or are there other interpretations and explanations? And last but not least, was monetization a linear process or did it show more discontinuities than continuities?
