本年は、文字を形成するための物体を決定し、物体を用いたタイポグラフィ装置を試作した。線上の物体には、(マスキング)テープを採用することにした。研究計画段階においては、A. 内部のアクチュエータによって能動的に変形するもの、B. 外部のアクチュエータによって受動的に変形するもの、が想定されていた。しかし前年度に実施した調査、試作、展示から、(1)文字の可読性を高めるためには、線に平坦さが必要である、(2)曲線を表現するためには、複数のアンカーポイントが必要である、(3)漢字を表現するためには、空間に部首等が固定できる必要がある、などの要件が判明した。そこで更なるスタディを進めた結果、マスキングテープの利用が浮上した。マスキングテープは塗装用途のみならず、公共空間のサインや、日用品やインテリアを装飾するために使用されている。一方で、一般的なマスキングテープは曲線を引くことが難しく、テープの捩れが防げない。特に平仮名のように曲線を多用する文字には適していない。そこで本研究は、短く断裁したマスキングテープを連続的に重ね貼りすることで、近似的に曲線を引く手法を発見した。この発見を機械化し、本研究はマスキングテープで文字を書くための装置をハンドヘルドサイズで試作した。現時点においても、プロトタイプは英数字のみならず、平仮名や漢字といった複雑な文字が描画できている。装置の特許出願にむけて、現在は所属機関とともに準備を進めている。
