Rethinking Sakhalin, Hokkaido and the Northern Territories: analysis of sub-regional identities and media discourses in Russia, Japan and the disputed islands

An international conference "Borderlands in the time of crisis" was organized at Hokkaido University on December 10-11, 2022. The conference was dedicated to transnational relations, migration, territorial disputes and local identities in Sakhalin, Hokkaido and the Northern Territories/Southern Kurils, and included reports and discussions by researchers from Japan, South Korea and the UK, as well as presentations by representatives of Japan Sakhalin Association, Korean International Network, Karafuto Ainu Association and Kitami Japan-Russia Friendship Association.Principal Investigator's report was dedicated to regional exchange and Japan-Russia sister cities in Hokkaido. A separate report dedicated to shifting Russo-Japanese border and migration was presented by Research Collaborator.
