コロナ禍による渡航がより容易になったことから、当初の予定通り、ヨーロッパでフィールドワークを行い、米国の白人ナショナリズムの影響や相互作用などについて調査する計画でいた。しかし、2022年２月に発生したロシアによるウクライナ侵攻により、当初予定していたウクライナ訪問が不可能になった。加えて、ヨーロッパ便のダイヤが大幅に改正され、かつインフレにより現地の滞在費が高騰したため、今年度はヨーロッパでの調査は取りやめ、代わりにアメリカ国内で調査を継続することにした。伝統的に白人ナショナリズムはアメリカの南部や西部で強かったが、近年はカリフォルニア州やオレゴン州、ワシントン州などの西海岸でも活発化している。その背景には人口構成の変化や高学歴化に伴う社会的分断があるが、今回はワシントン州シアトルを中心に、白人ナショナリズムの活動家や、反差別の立場から活動する団体関係にヒアリングを行った。特に注目したのは国際的なネットワーキングの現状把握だったが、コロナ禍による渡航制限などで、物理的な交流は不可能になったものの、その代替手段としてZoomなどを利用したコミュニケーション、あるいは秘匿性の高いSNSなどを通して、ネットワーキングが進んでいることが明らかになった。むしろオンラインで過ごす時間が多くなった分、過激化が進んでいる印象も受けた。同時に、反ワクチンや反ロックダウンなどの政策、様々な陰謀論との関係も深い。また、物価高騰やウクライナ支援への「疲れ」が、欧米における自国第一主義や排外主義的な言説にさらなる拍車をかけている面もある。単なる人種問題上の根深さがあり、それゆえに考察の必要性を感じた。
