本研究の目的は、新優生学思想がどのような遺伝子観を前提としているのかを明らかにすることにより、この思想を理解・評価するための視点を獲得することにある。また、新優生学思想について理解を深めることを第一の目的としながらも、子孫への遺伝子操作をめぐる既存の倫理議論が遺伝子や遺伝に関してどのような前提のもと議論を進めてきたのか分析することで、これまでの議論の妥当性について検討を試みるものである。具体的には、今日までに蓄積されてきた子孫への遺伝子操作(デザイナー・ベビー)に関する倫理議論を対象に、①論点整理をし、新優生学を軸とした論者間の対立構造や各論者によって微妙に異なる新優生学思想への評価を明らかにし、②各論者が前提としている遺伝子観(既存の議論において無自覚に前提とされてきた遺伝子や遺伝に関する知見)を分析・考察することで、 遺伝子操作をめぐる議論の論理的妥当性を検討する。そのうえで、特に③新優生学を擁護する議論が前提としている遺伝子観をふまえて新優生学思想の一端を明らかにすることを目指す。22年度は、昨年度に続いて遺伝や遺伝子の概念をめぐる哲学的議論に関する文献や、新優生学思想と関連する自由主義や正義論関連の文献の講読を行った。また、新優生学が前提としている遺伝子観の分析・考察を進めるにあたり、優生学と遺伝子観との関係性の歴史的変遷について更に知見を深める必要があると判断したため、19世紀後半から20世紀初頭の優生学や優生政策について取り扱った歴史学や思想研究領域の文献を収集・講読した。
