本研究はジェームズ・スチュワード=ロックハート卿(1858-1937、ロックハート)の旧蔵書を対象とする。ロックハートは1880年頃から約40年間、中国に外交官として滞在し、その間様々な資料を蒐集し、絵画・写真・書簡等の資料に交え、約1200タイトルの旧蔵書を残し、それの多くはケンブリッジ大学図書館に収蔵されている。それから、筆者はスコットランド国立図書館(National Library of Scotland、NLS)にロックハートが残した自筆の旧蔵書目録を発見し、それをもとに、研究対象を特定し、デジタルアーカイブを作成した。ロックハートの没後にイギリス国内では東洋研究のブームが興り、旧蔵書は解体され、本研究対象はケンブリッジ大学図書館に買収された経緯がある。ロックハートの旧蔵書には「漢籍」は勿論、「和刻本漢籍（和刻本）」「準漢籍」も含まれていることがこれまでの研究で明らかにした。「漢籍」とは漢字・漢文によって記された書物、日本は早くからそれを輸入し、辛亥革命までに中国で刊行されたほとんどの漢籍を日本が複製し、使用した。このように、日本で覆刻・翻刻された「漢籍」は「和刻本」と呼ばれる。中国以外の国や地域で出版された漢文の書物は日本で 「準漢籍」と呼ばれる。朝鮮半島やベトナムで出版されたものがこれに該当する。これまでの研究は「和刻本」のみに焦点を当てたが、過年度の研究は「準漢籍」の需要も多かった事を判明した。そして、これまでの研究はロックハード自筆目録のデータベース化を人工知能による手書き文字認識(Handwritten Text Recognition、HTR)の技術を用い、データ化を試みたが、複数のツールやプログラムを実験した結果、技術そのものがまだ実用段階ではないことだと判明し、それから昨年度は研究者自身の手作業により文字を起こし、データ化を進めている。
