项目摘要

前年度までは、当初の計画通り、D.H.ロレンス文学における他者性と視点の問題という観点から『息子と恋人』と『虹』について論文を執筆し、査読誌への掲載に至ったが、その後、他者性と視点の問題という観点はロレンス文学全体を把握・議論する上で必ずしも十分な枠組みではないという認識に至り、より広い観点から残りのロレンスの主要作品を論じることを目標に定めた。今年度は『チャタレイ夫人の恋人』について、他者性と視点の問題とは別個の観点から論じたものを査読誌に投稿し、掲載に至った（「D.H.ロレンス『チャタレイ夫人の恋人』におけるユートピアの脆さと肛門性交の描写の意味」『テクスト研究』19(2023):23-41）。当該論文では、『チャタレイ夫人の恋人』が現代文明の病理や害悪に対抗する形で打ち出す性愛のユートピアが、その際立ったイノセンスゆえに帯びることとなっているある種の「脆さ」に着目し、従来論議を呼んできた第16章におけるコニーとメラーズの肛門性交のくだりが、その「脆さ」を打ち消すために導入された戦略的なものとみなし得ることを論じた。コニーとメラーズが示す子どものようなイノセンスは、二人の性愛のユートピアから、セックスが本来帯びているところの根源的な「悪」を――それがセックスに与えるある種の不穏な力ごと――脱色して骨抜きにしまっており、それが前述の「脆さ」をもたらしていると見ることができるが、コニーとメラーズの肛門性交という性的逸脱行為は、そのようなセックスの根源的な力を二人の性愛のユートピアに取り戻させ、以って件の「脆さ」を克服するために設けられた、意識的・戦略的な「悪」として解釈し得ると結論づけた。そして、このような印象・余韻レベルでの繊細とも言い得る調整の身振りは、唯我独尊的なイメージが先行しがちなロレンスの小説作法について新たな見方を提示できる可能性を示していることを示唆した。
